Joel Cadbury has been living and working in East London as a composer for over 15 years. With a career spanning film, commercials, documentaries, dance, and drama, he has also been recognised as an established singer, songwriter, and performer with the bands sOuth and James Lavelle’s musical alter-ego, UNKLE.
Hit TV shows including Six Feet Under and The OC found good use for sOuth’s striking electronic pop-rock stylings, while top British director Jonathan Glazer put Cadbury and co together with Unkle to score cult gangster film Sexy Beast. The breakthrough score for Cadbury – Michael Winterbottom’s chiller thriller The Killer Inside Me, started a fruitful relationship with the director, which further led him to work on The Face of an Angel and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Other film credits include Northern Soul coming-of-age drama Soul Boy, and Brit heist caper Comes a Bright Day.
In addition to film and TV, Cadbury has scored campaigns for brands like COS, Bentley, Ford, Tiffany & Co., and Jaguar.
Cadbury has collaborated with acclaimed British choreographer Wayne McGregor on several projects for TV and live performance, including an episode of the BBC series Civilisations, Borderlands (commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet), and a video installation/live performance at the Royal Opera House welcoming heads of state to the 2012 London Olympics. He continues to collaborate with McGregor, and in 2018 he composed Winged Bull in The Elephant case, performed at the National Gallery.
2022 will see the premiere of Joel’s score for the Wayne McGregor production of Jim Henson’s ‘The Dark Crystal’, as well as the BBC’s Oliver Twist spin-off TV series ‘Dodger’.
